Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use challenges among adults.
QHA is providing Mental Health First Aid training to increase the capacity of rural communities including the workforces of critical access hospitals, long term care facilities, and community service providers to use this evidence-based practice to appropriately recognize the signs and symptoms of individuals experiencing mental illness, respond to acute needs and refer to additional available resources.
This training also seeks to increase utilization of available behavioral health resources by increasing awareness and utilization of resource linking services through development of awareness campaign and materials to be used by Mental Health First Aid trainees.
Training will be ongoing with multiple trainings offered each month. The class is hosted virtually via Zoom. Training requires 2 hours pre-work plus a post-test and evaluation. Continuing Education Approval
This event has been approved for 8.75 continuing education credits as follows:

This course is valued at $170. Thanks to a grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), North Dakota learners may attend at no charge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the training?
The virtual training is normally from 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM with a few 5 and 15-minute breaks as well as a 30-minute break for lunch. You must be available to participate for the full 7 hours in order to receive your certificate.
What do I do if I can participate for part of the training, but have to miss part of the day?
Depending on how much of the class you need to miss, we will most likely recommend you reschedule for a day you can be actively engaged the whole day to receive the most benefit.
What do I do if I can’t make it to the training I signed up for?
We understand things come up and schedules change. If you can’t attend the training you are scheduled for, please cancel or reschedule when you receive the confirmation email 2 weeks prior to the class date or email mentalhealth@qualityhealthnd.org.
What happens if I complete my prework but then I am unable to participate in the training?
If you already completed the prework but then end up being unable to participate in the training, a large portion of the prework can be transferred to a training within 60 days of the completed prework. Let us know if this is the case and we will help you through that process.
Is the training in person?
No. This class is hosted via Zoom but does encourage participation and interaction similar to an in-person class.
When can I begin on the prework?
You will receive an email one-week prior to your scheduled training with information on how to get logged in and begin your prework.
If I didn’t complete my prework in time for my scheduled training, can I still participate?
No, if your prework is not complete by the start of your scheduled training, you will have to reschedule to a different date.
I signed up for a training, but it is less than one-week away and I have not received an email.

How long is the Mental Health First Aid certification valid?
The Mental Health First Aid Certification is valid for three years from the date of certification.
How do I become recertified after my 3-year certification has expired?
Adult Mental Health First Aid Credentials are valid for three years and must be renewed at the end of each 3-year period to maintain accreditation. Mental Health First Aiders can recertify their MHFA credentials by taking the class again (preferred) or complete an online in a 60-minute training priced at $29.95.
